SLUNJ is a small town in the northwestern part of the Croatian hinterland, about 50 km from the town of Karlovac. It lies on the so-called old road to the sea. If you want to visit the Plitvice Lakes National Park, you have to take the highway in the town of Karlovac and continue along this old road to the town of Slunj and further to Plitvice Lakes. If you only go to the sea, this old way is an interesting alternative. The road is very good, shorter than the highway and free of charge.

There is beautiful nature in Slunj. The river Korana and the river Slunčica flow here. The confluence is formed by beautiful waterfalls. Around the waterfalls are wooden log cabins, formerly watermills for grain. The cabins have been renovated and are used for tourist accommodation.

On the river Korana /on the upper course it forms a system of Plitvice Lakes /there is a beautiful natural swimming pool above the confluence.

The river Slunčica springs from the ground about 10 km from the town of Slunj. It is very cold, swimming is not recommended.

If you want to see the nature park Plitvice Lakes, we recommend accommodation in Slunj. It is a short walk to Plitvice and at the same time accommodation is cheaper than directly at Plitvice Lakes. The advantage is also that you have all the services available in the city: restaurants, shops, banks, exchange offices, a petrol station, a doctor, etc. Every Thursday there is a big market in the city center.
