Island LASTOVO

The island of LASTOVO is the most remote inhabited South Dalmatian island. It covers an area of 41 km2 and has a permanent population of about 700. The highest mountain /rather a hill /is 417 m high HUM. The whole island is forested. There are about 40 other uninhabited islands around the island. Lastovo is one of the two most forested islands in the Adriatic /the other is the island of Mljet near Dubrovnik /. Thanks to 2,700 hours of sunshine a year, Lastovo is also one of the warmest and sunniest islands.

The island of Lastovo is one of the ten Mediterranean islands that are on the list of the World Wildlife Fund.

The Croatian government has declared the island, including the adjacent islands, a protected landscape area.

Lastovo is famous for its chimneys /FUMARI /. Minaret-shaped chimneys are part of every house. Thanks to the remoteness of the island, a completely unique folklore has been preserved /e.g. treasure burning.

The island belonged to Italy after the First World War /most of the inhabitants speak Italian /, after the Second World War it was returned to Croatia or Yugoslavia. Until 1992, the island was closed to tourists because there was a military naval base. Thanks to this, the whole island is completely electrified, there is a city water supply everywhere /the island has its own sources of drinking water /and asphalt roads almost everywhere.

The biggest advantage of the island is the minimum of tourist facilities, almost untouched nature, swimming in deserted bays /Lastovo is not mountainous and there is almost everywhere good access to the sea /and excellent healthy cuisine. Everything you eat and drink here was grown on the island or caught in the sea around the island /Lastovo is known for its wealth of fish /. On the small fields in the middle of the island, everything you need grows normally - without chemical spraying, fertilizers, etc.

Lastovo is ideal for pedestrians and cyclists /small elevations, roads lead through the forest /, for surfers /bays form so-called lakes - there is smooth water without waves /, for divers /the water is above average clean, lots of fish, diving school /.

If you are looking for peace, clean sea, unspoiled nature and excellent healthy Mediterranean cuisine, just something completely different than the others, Lastovo is the right choice. Lastovo is really completely different.

A four-day music festival /jazz, rock, blues /is held on the island every year in July. Musicians from all over Europe go to this festival.

There is a petrol station, bank /ATM /, post office, health center, several shops and relatively many restaurants in Lastovo.

The island of Lastovo is easily accessible by ferry from Split. The journey takes approximately 5 hours. The ferry runs daily, is air conditioned, has a restaurant and café. After a tiring journey to Split, you can relax on the ferry.
